The world of User Experience (UX) design is rapidly evolving, shaped by technological advancements and ever-changing user expectations. Although the current UX market is challenging, the industry is resilient, and while there are fluctuations in demand, market trends indicate that opportunities will increase in the near future.

To gain a deeper understanding of the industry, we spoke to two experienced recruiters at Horizontal, Jamie Arntson and Kaitlin Enriquez. They shared insights on the current trends driving demand and UX-related roles that clients are looking for, given the current market.

Current trends

UX design is continuously evolving, driven by technological advancements and shifting user expectations. Some of the key trends shaping the future of UX include:

Data-driven insights: Informing UX decisions through analytics

  • Data is a powerful tool for understanding user behavior. By leveraging analytics, designers can make informed decisions, iteratively testing and refining products to better align with user expectations.

Designing for everyone: Prioritizing inclusivity and accessibility

  • Inclusive UX design is crucial for creating digital experiences that resonate with a diverse audience. By considering cultural, linguistic and socio-economic diversity, designers can build empathy and accessibility into their work. This not only broadens market reach but also fosters stronger user loyalty.

Sustainable UX: Designing with the planet in mind

  • As awareness of climate change grows, designers are rethinking how products and services impact the environment. Sustainable UX aims to reduce energy consumption, minimize waste and ensure ethical sourcing of materials, aligning with the increasing demand for eco-conscious solutions.

Ethical design: Building trust in the digital age

  • With current technological advancements, designers are facing challenges surrounding privacy, data security and algorithmic bias. Ethical design promotes transparency and user welfare, fostering trust through responsible use of technology, particularly in AI-driven solutions.

Emerging roles

The UX landscape is seeing a shift toward industry-specific expertise, with companies looking for professionals who understand the unique needs of sectors like banking, retail and e-commerce. If you’re a current UX job seeker in this market, looking for a role in an industry you know may be your best route. As Jamie Arntson, Lead Recruiter at Horizontal, explains, “Clients are looking for professionals with expertise in their sector. It’s no longer just about being a great designer—it’s about understanding the industry.”

With the challenging couple of years the market has faced, clients are not only looking for industry experts, but holistic designers. Jamie says, "As the market evolves, there’s a growing demand for holistic designers who can handle end-to-end processes. Clients want to maximize their investment, which is why full-stack designers—masters of everything—are increasingly sought after."

Additionally, new roles are emerging to meet the evolving needs of businesses. “We’re noticing a rise in content design roles, which used to be called UX writing,” adds Kaitlin Enriquez, Recruiter at Horizontal. “There’s growing demand for designers who can craft content that enhances the overall user experience.”

In this competitive market, standing out is more important than ever. Kaitlin emphasizes, “Having a strong portfolio is key. Make sure it’s up to date and tells your story—how you approach your projects, the challenges you've faced and how you solved them.”

Other key roles gaining prominence include:

  • Product design specialist
  • UX writer
  • Director of user experience
  • AI/ML product designer
  • Conversational UX designer
  • Principal UX designer
